Early this morning news broke from Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN that the New Orleans Pelicans would be making a trade with the Chicago Bulls for Nikola Mirotic. Mirotic has been in trade rumors for weeks. He reportedly was unhappy with the team. He even got into an altercation with Bobby Portis that left him with a facial fracture and a concussion.
In this trade, the Chicago Bulls get Omer Asik, who was traded to New Orleans by Houston for a first-round draft pick. The Bulls also get guards Tony Allen and Jameer Nelson, and a protected 2018 first-round draft pick.
The Pelicans had to send the draft pick over to complete the deal, now they have dropped Asik’s contract. This will allow them to pursue Greg Monroe pending his buyout from Phoenix. There are many teams that will want Monroe when he becomes a free agent. After the loss of Demarcus Cousins tho, the Pelicans will be in hard pursuit.
The Pelicans will also receive a 2018 second-round pick they sent to the Bulls in the Quincy Pondexter trade. The Bulls will waive Pondexter to free up roster space. The Bulls will also waive Allen, and most likely Nelson.
Mirotic signed a two year deal with the Bulls in August. He has been averaging 16.8 points and 6.4 rebounds after missing the first 23 games of the season.
