Continuing a Dynasty; the New Age Spurs

A [sports] dynasty is a team or individual that dominates their sport or league for an extended length of time. There have been many dynasties in sports, most notably the New England Patriots, Boston Celtics, Los Angeles Lakers, Chicago Bulls, Dallas Cowboys, and New York Yankees. There is one that has been a quiet giant, but was always around; the San Antonio Spurs.

Some dynasties have to be rebuilt, but there are some that are consistent. The San Antonio Spurs have been consistent through time. Through the NBA draft and free agency, they have managed to keep their roster upright. Greg Popovich is one of the most polarizing head coaches in the NBA. He keeps his players prepared, and the way he develops the young talent he acquires is amazing. David Robinson, Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobili, Tony Parker, Kawhi Leonard, Danny Green, Dejounte Murray, Rudy Gay, and LaMarcus Aldridge are just a few players that have been coached by Popovich in his tenure at San Antonio.

Popovich is 1,150 – 506 (.694) in 1,656 games coached as of the 2016 – 2017 season. The Spurs have 5 NBA Finals championships under Popovich. He has coached them from 1996 until the present day. Out of his 21 seasons, he’s had one losing season. Popovich has been the X-factor in the Spurs winning history, no matter who is players are he wins. Even with undoubtedly his best player in Kawhi Leonard injured for most of the season so far, he has the Spurs ranked 3rd in the West currently.

Earlier this week it was announced that Dejounte Murray would start over Tony Parker on the roster. Murray was drafted in 2016 as the 29th pick in the first round. He is a 6 ft. 7 in. guard from the Washington Huskies. In his first start Monday against LeBron James and the Cavaliers, Murray had a double-double that consisted of 19 pts and 10 rebounds. We also know that LaMarcus Aldridge was ultimately brought in to replace Tim Duncan, and Leonard is the certified All-Star on the team. Pau Gasol is also a pivotal part of these new age Spurs under the legend Popovich. There has slowly been a new beginning among the organization in a way.

According to ESPN’s Jalen Rose, “Kawhi Leonard wants out of San Antonio.” According to Rose, “The Spurs are having trouble attracting marquee players to come play with Kawhi.” Is there trouble in what looks like paradise? Leonard is the key piece to this new age Spurs dynasty. Some people call it a soap opera, but Popovich has since addressed the rumors. Popovich says that “nobody wants to come back more than Kawhi.” We will see what happens as the trade deadline approaches, and the season progresses.

What do you guys think? Will the dynasty stay the course under Popovich? Will the dynasty fall? These are questions people are going to ask until the rumors calm down within the Spurs organization. What do you guys think?
