The Houston Astros have the potential to be a dynasty with the young core that they have in place. Teams around the major leagues will need to bring their ‘A’ game every time they play the Astros as playing for wins just a lot more difficult in Houston. The Astros acquired Pittsburgh Pirate ace, Gerrit Cole to beef up their starting rotation.
According to Tim Brown of Yahoo and Ken Rosenthal of the Athletic, the Pirates will be receiving right-handed relievers in Joe Musgrove and Michael Feliz, third baseman Colin Moran and outfielder Jason Martin.
Cole will be joining two ace anchors in Dallas Keuchel and Justin Verlander as the third anchor. Although the Astros have depth in Charlie Morton, Lance McCullers Jr., and Brad Peacock, they were very inconsistent throughout the 2017 season thus why Cole is now an Astro. I expect the veteran Morton would take the fourth spot in the rotation while McCullers and Peacock will battle it out for the last spot.
McCullers, when he gets his feel for the ball, is very dominant. It led to him becoming an All-Star in the first half last season, but then he lost control and struggled in the second half. Despite this, I think McCullers will strive to do well because of his curveball, his best weapon when its right. I think Peacock is better suited for the bullpen more than being in the rotation because he has the ability to go out and eat up multiple innings if needed.
Cole also serves as insurance for the future as Keuchel is set to become a free agent and he will command big money that just might put the Astros out of the running for his services. Keuchel certainly will want to go big because this contract may be his last as a baseball player. If he pitches well in 2018 he may try to go for the type of money that Los Angeles Dodgers ace, Clayton Kershaw, will command.
For now, the Astros are stacked in the rotation, have a good young core in second baseman Jose Altuve, shortstop Carlos Correa, third baseman Alex Bregman and outfielder George Springer ready to defend their championship title and contend for more down the road.
